A friend was having a tree lopped. I was struck by the disparity in the roles of the man swinging high in the tree with the chainsaw and the man yelling suggestions up from the ground.

This seemed like a fertile situation for simmering resentment on the part of the man in the tree.

That branch is dead, it'll have to come down
You yell up the tree, standing safe on the ground
I'm hanging up here with my arse in a sling
You're on the phone, jacking up the next thing.

You take the phone calls, sometimes you ring me
I do the climbing when we strike a big tree
You run the chipper, you take the fee
You fire the slingshot, sometimes you hit me.

You get the money, you got the life
Two kids at uni, a credit card wife
A house on the hill with an oregon deck
I'm like a monkey with a rope round its neck.

But I've got the chainsaw, I've got the tree
How come you're always the big boss of me?
Accidents happen, the insurance is high
Branches break off, who can tell why?

These thoughts are a comfort when it's too much to stand
A chainsaw that slips right out of my hand
A heavy branch cracking despite my best care
The chipper reversing, firing logs through the air.
